I have taken inspiration for this one of a kind statement ring from the colours and shapes found in large rock formations and recycled one natural product to represent another in a piece of wearable art.
I started experimenting with recycling newspaper when I was invited to exhibit in an exhibition all about the ’Message’, as newspapers have been a worldwide method of spreading the word throughout history. I love carving the blocks of recycled newspaper into organic/natural forms, highlighting its stone like qualities and exposing the colours in the print. Firstly I glue sheets of newspaper together, only a few at a time, leaving them to dry before adding more, until I have a block of newspaper. Once this is bone dry I cut out my chosen form and then shape it using crafting knives and sanders. This reveals the colourful inks printed on the paper which further makes each piece unique. I then varnish each piece to strengthen the material and highlight the colours.
N.B. – Care – while my paper jewellery is hard wearing please try not immerse in water and leave to dry naturally if it does become wet)
Here I have inserted a silver ring shank, smoothing the edges to the contours of the ring and added a small white acrylic detail to the top edge of the ring.
Ring shank size: P
Ring dimensions: 3cm wide, 4.5cm top to bottom, 1cm thick, 2cm tall above finger
